ABOUT CANNON FALLS

Cannon Falls is a quaint small town nestled in the Cannon River Valley, which offers activities all-year around. Right in Cannon Falls, we have our very own winery and brewery, a variety of antique shops, retail stores, and restaurants, plus three golf courses within 20 minutes.

The highlight of our community is the Cannon Valley Trail.  This is a bike path that connects Cannon Falls with Red Wing, MN, and it hooks-up to the MN State Mills Town Bike Trail to the west. We also have miles of snowmobile trails.

The Twin Cities and Rochester are just 40 miles away on MN Hwy 52 which runs right through our community.

From Farm to Fork

Cannon Falls has become a well-recognized leader in the booming sustainable food and beverage market.

Agriculture has been central to the economy of Cannon Falls since its earliest days. Today the community is well-known for the natural meat products that are produced here. Lorentz Meats has been a local favorite for generations with their all-natural sausages, hams and bacon made in their custom-processing facility. Free-range turkeys are still grown at Ferndale Market, now a third generation farm producing a variety of natural turkey products.

Whether the products are distributed regionally or nationally, the local food scene is a source of pride in Cannon Falls. The Artisan Plaza Deli + Market and Oly's Roadhouse proudly features many of locally grown and produced products.

You are invited to explore the flavors of Cannon Falls from farm to fork!

Fun Fact

Native Americans and traders frequently hid their canoes near the rivers' mouths, away from the heavily traveled Mississippi River. Because of this, the French Fur Traders named the stream “Riviere aux Canots" or River of Canoes. Easterners hearing the French pronounce "canots" thought they were saying Cannon, and the Cannon River it became. Zebulon Pike mentions the Cannon River in his journals. Our town is named after the river and the falls, a natural cascade located along the Little Cannon River. In 1853, father and son, Richard & William Freeborn traced the Cannon River upstream to its falls. The two explorers kept their find a secret until they could return a year later to stake a claim. The city was settled in 1854. It is the only city in the world named Cannon Falls.
